OS/2 2.1 SERVICEPAK (XR06200)
UPDATE FOR HIGH-RESOLUTION/COLOR DISPLAY DRIVERS
NOT PACKAGED WITH OS/2 2.1
(U.S. ONLY UPDATE)
______________________________________________________________________
THE CONTENTS OF THIS PACKAGE ARE APPROVED FOR USE BY U.S. ONLY CUSTOMERS.
IN ORDER TO USE THE CONTENTS OF THIS PACKAGE YOU AGREE THAT YOU ARE A
CURRENT LICENSEE OF OS/2 2.1 AND THE OS/2 2.1 SERVICEPAK (XR06200).
YOU ALSO AGREE THAT THIS CODE IS GOVERNED BY THE TERMS AND CONDITIONS OF
THE OS/2 PROGRAM LICENSE AGREEMENT.
DO NOT USE THE INFORMATION OR THE CODE UPDATES PROVIDED IN THIS PACKAGE
UNLESS YOU HAVE OBTAINED YOUR GRAPHICS DEVICE DRIVER FROM A SOURCE OTHER
THAN THE OS/2 2.1 PRODUCT PACKAGE.
This document contains the following information:
SECTION 1: INTRODUCTION (description of why you need this update)
SECTION 2: SETTING UP VGA MODE
SECTION 3: APPLYING THE OS/2 2.1 SERVICEPAK (XR06200)
SECTION 4: RESTORING HIGH-RESOLUTION AND COLOR AFTER INSTALLING
OS/2 2.1 SERVICE PACK (XR06200)
SECTION 1: INTRODUCTION
_______________________
In certain instances, applying the OS/2 2.1 ServicePak (XR06200)
results in overwriting users' current levels of high-resolution or
color support (greater than 640 x 480 x 16). The condition occurs if
you have installed graphics display drivers obtained from sources other
than the OS/2 2.1 product package. The OS/2 2.1 ServicePak (XR06200)
replaces display driver files such as, BVHVGA.DLL, BVHSVGA.DLL, VGA.SYS,
and VSVGA.SYS. This might leave your high-resolution/color driver
partially installed.
Use this package if you have installed display drivers from sources
other than the OS/2 product package and:
- you want to install the OS/2 2.1 ServicePak (XR06200).
OR
- you have installed the OS/2 2.1 ServicePak (XR06200) and have
successfully restarted your system. (Your display driver might
be partially overwritten.)
OR
- you have already installed the OS/2 2.1 ServicePak (XR06200),
restarted your system, and the display is unreadable.
IBM has tested a representative set of graphics display drivers
supporting a broad range of popular display adapters and hardware
systems. The tested systems and graphics adapters are listed in
this document. However, the procedures described in this README file
apply to a broad range of drivers supporting the leading display
adapters. If your display adapter is not included on the list of adapters
tested by IBM, refer to the OS/2 Hardware Compatibility List (PCMTAB.ZIP),
which is located on the following electronic services:
- CompuServe** (IBM OS/2 Support Forum\Library 17\IBMFiles)
- IBM National Support Center Bulletin Board System
(PCCBBS, 919-517-0001).
- Internal IBM Tools Disk (MKTOOLS as PCMTAB PACKAGE)
- PRODIGY** (in the IBM Club, file download area)
- OS2BBS (in the Software D\L area)
- the anonymous FTP Internet (at software.watson.ibm.com).
Use the OS/2 Hardware Compatibility List to locate your display adapter
and chip set. Once you locate the chip set for your adapter, locate the
chip set that matches it in the list provided in Section 4. This will
determine whether you should use the display driver procedures and
workarounds provided in this document.
The diskette provided in this package contains:
- Updates to the SETVGA command
- All files necessary to reset the video mode to VGA
- This README file with all the procedures necessary to reset the
video mode to VGA and restore high-resolution and color support
to your system.
The information provided in this document should be used in the
following order:
1. Install the current IBM VGA driver provided on the Display
Driver Utilities Update Diskette. This ensures that you have a
fully installed display driver.
2. Apply the OS/2 2.1 ServicePak (XR06200) if you have not
already done so.
If you have installed the OS/2 2.1 ServicePak (XR06200) before
installing the IBM VGA display driver, you must install the
IBM VGA driver before you restore your high-resolution and
color support.
3. Then restore your high-resolution and color support.
NOTES:
o If you copy the files provided on the diskette that came
with this package to a location other than a diskette, please be
sure that you are not using the display driver utilities that were
originally installed with OS/2 2.1 or from the OS/2 2.1 ServicePak
(XR06200).
o DO NOT use Selective Install to reinstall VGA, high-resolution,
or color support to your OS/2 system unless the display driver
currently installed on your system was provided with OS/2.
o The updates provided on the diskette that came with this package,
can be used from a 1.44 megabyte, 3.5-inch diskette or from your
hard disk. If you are using the 5.25-inch diskette package, you
must follow the steps below to unpack the updates from your
diskette to your hard disk.
1. Copy the files on the 5.25-inch diskette provided in this
package to your hard disk.
2. From the directory where the 211DDU.ZIP file is located,
Type:
PKUNZIPF 211DDU -D
and press Enter.
This creates a new directory on your OS/2 partition
named \211DDU.
3. Type:
CD 211DDU
and press Enter.

SECTION 4: RESTORING HIGH-RESOLUTION AND COLOR AFTER INSTALLING
OS/2 2.1 SERVICE PACK (XR06200)
______________________________________________________________________
Install your display driver using the installation procedures
provided in the README file that comes with the display driver. Refer
to the notes following the table for exceptions and workarounds that
apply to the display driver listed below.
NOTE: The version of DSPINSTL included in ServicePak XR06200, does not
copy older versions of VSVGA.SYS from your display driver to your
OS/2 system that has been updated with the ServicePak. The
display driver will be partially installed and can cause
unpredictable results. The workarounds for the ATI** and TSENG**
display drivers correct this problem.
If you install display drivers other than those that came with the
OS/2 2.1 product package, files such as BVHVGA.DLL, BVHSVGA.DLL,
VGA.SYS and VSVGA.SYS might be replaced. Replacing those files
removes any updates applied to the files when you installed the
OS/2 2.1 ServicePak (XR06200).

NOTES:
a. Install the ATI driver by following the instructions provided in the ATI
README file. Then, from the partition where OS/2 is installed, type:
UNPACK A:ATIM32
(where A: represents the fully qualified path where the ATI driver
is located)
and press Enter.
This updates three files on your OS/2 system. Failure to follow
this procedure might cause problems when you run Windows** and DOS
applications in a window on the desktop. This workaround copies the
VSVGA.SYS file from your display driver diskette to your computer.
Note to users of the OS/2 2.1 ServicePak (XR06200) CD-ROM version.
To reinstall the ATI driver:
1. Stop the ServicePak installation.
2. Restart your system.
3. Follow the appropriate procedure to reinstall the VGA driver.
4. Restore your high-resolution.
b. You can reinstall the S3 16-bit display driver for the 801, 805,
and 928 chip sets. There a several versions of OS/2 drivers
(available on electronic services and from other vendors), supporting
the 90C801, 90C805, and 90C928 chip sets from the S3 Corporation
IBM provides service for the S3 32-bit display driver and
recommends that you install the new version of this driver included
in ServicePak XR06200. This 32-bit display driver better
utilizes the S3 chip sets.
Note: IBM recommends that you DO NOT reinstall the S3-supplied
16-bit driver, the STB-supplied S3 driver, or the IBM-supplied
S3-16M driver.
To install the S3 32-bit display driver, follow these steps:
1. Open the "OS/2 System" folder.
2. Open "Command Prompts".
3. Open an OS/2 window or OS/2 full-screen session.
4. Type:
DSPINSTL
and then press Enter.
5. When you see the Display Driver Install window, select "Primary
Display".
6. Select "OK".
7. When you see the Primary Display Adapter Type window, select
"32 bit S3 Display Drivers".
8. Follow the instructions for the Monitor Configuration/Selection
Utility. For more information on when to use this utility
to set the refresh rate, see the OS/2 2.1 Installation Guide,
Appendix A.
Note to users of the OS/2 2.1 ServicePak (XR06200) CD-ROM version.
To reinstall the S3 driver:
1. From an OS/2 command prompt, type:
DSPINSTL
and press Enter.
2. Select "Primary Display".
3. Select "OK".
4. Choose the defaults for monitor setting.
5. When the "Directory Screen" is displayed, select "Change".
6. When the directory list is displayed, select the "SP6I617"
directory.
7. Select "Set".
8. Press Esc to return to the "Directory Screen".
9. Select "Install".
c. You can reinstall the Trident-supplied 16-bit display driver, but
the OS/2 2.1 ServicePak (XR06200) SVGA 32-bit display driver better
utilizes the Trident 8900C cards. IBM provides service for the OS/2
2.1 ServicePak SVGA 32-bit display driver and recommends that you
install the new version of this driver.
Note: IBM recommends that you DO NOT reinstall the Trident driver
supplied on numerous bulletin boards, because it removes fixes
from the Base Video Handler and Virtual Device Driver for the
OS/2 VGA driver.
To install the OS/2 2.1 ServicePak (XR06200) SVGA 32-bit display
driver, follow these steps:
"Trident 8900C".
8. Follow the instructions for the Monitor Configuration/Selection
Utility. For more information on when to use this utility
to set the refresh rate, see the OS/2 2.1 Installation Guide,
Appendix A.
d. After you install the OS/2 2.1 ServicePak (XR06200), install the Weitek
display driver by following the instructions provided in the Weitek
README file. IBM testing indicates that the Weitek display driver runs
successfully on several computers but encounters "snow" with some
configurations.
e. TSENG drivers dated prior to 3-23-94 require the following
workaround.
1. Reinstall the TSENG driver by following the instructions
located in the README file provided with the TSENG driver.
2. From a command prompt in the partition where OS/2 is installed,
Type:
UNPACK A:VSVGA.SY_
and press Enter.
The VSVGA.SYS file is now updated with the correct version of
the file provided on the TSENG driver diskette. This
workaround copies the VSVGA.SYS file from the display driver
diskette to your computer.
